On Monday, December 8, 2025, the Islamic Economics Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan (UMLA) held an Expert Lecture for the Islamic Financial Institutions course. The session invited a guest speaker from Inisiatif Zakat Indonesia (IZI) East Java, Abdul Basyit, SEI, M.SEI, and was attended by all Islamic Economics students of UMLA.

Carrying the theme “Understanding Amil Zakat Institutions More Closely,” the lecture aimed to deepen students’ knowledge of the strategic role played by zakat institutions in national zakat management.

During his presentation, Abdul Basyit explained that Indonesia has enormous zakat potential, one of the largest in the world. However, the actual zakat collected so far is still only a small percentage of that potential. He stated:

“Indonesia’s zakat potential is tremendous, yet only a few percent has been realized. This shows that there is still significant work that needs to be done.”

He further emphasized that Amil Zakat Institutions (LAZ) serve as a bridge between muzakki (donors) and mustahik (recipients), ensuring that zakat funds are managed professionally and reach the rightful beneficiaries. He added:

“If zakat distribution does not reach the right people, then the intended impact of zakat will not be achieved.”

The event received enthusiastic response from students as it provided practical insights into Islamic philanthropy and strengthened their academic understanding of Islamic financial institutions, particularly zakat management bodies.

The Islamic Economics Study Program hopes that this expert lecture will encourage students to appreciate the importance of professional and trustworthy zakat governance and to contribute actively to the development of Indonesia’s Islamic economic ecosystem.
