Umla International Lecture attended by five foreign countries
The International Summer Course 2022 was held online at Muhammadiyah University Lamongan for two weeks (August 8-22, 2022).
The event was organized by the Sharia Economics Study Program and the Office of International Affairs at Muhammadiyah University Lamongan. The language of instruction was English.
This inaugural Summer Course was attended by 56 participants from 13 universities worldwide across five countries: Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Palestine, and Bangladesh.
This online international course is a creative initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating innovative virtual learning for international students.
Elvina Assadam, Head of the Sharia Economics Study Program at Muhammadiyah University Lamongan, explained that the International Summer Course 2022 aims to introduce Islamic finance in Indonesia to the international community.
"Indonesia ranks fourth in the global economy and finance sector based on the Global Islamic Economy Indicator in the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2022, launched by Dinar Standard in 2022," she said.
Therefore, the Sharia Economics study program adopted the theme "Exploring the Practice of Indonesian Islamic Finance: Understanding Islamic Microfinance and Socio-Finance."
Microeconomics
Participants were introduced to sharia financial practices, including sharia cooperatives, the Statement of Financial Accounting Standards, sharia principles, Sharia People's Banks (BPR), Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (Baitul Maal wa Tamwil), marketing from an Islamic perspective, zakat digitalization, waqf accounting, and the halal industry.
She informed that the 2022 International Summer Course is collaborating with Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta and Muhammadiyah University of Malang to provide speakers at this event.
Expert speakers will be from Bank Syariah Madinah to highlight the practices of Sharia People's Banks in Indonesia.
"Hopefully, this activity will become a regular event at the Muhammadiyah University of Lamongan's Sharia Economics Study Program, and can be conducted in Arabic," Elvina hoped.
Lectures began on August 9, 2022, with Faricha Maf'ula, a lecturer at the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan's Sharia Economics department, discussing financial reporting in Islamic financial institutions in Indonesia.
There was also a lecture on sharia principles in Islamic financial transactions in Indonesia by Khubby Mulyono. On August 10, 2022, Fakhruddin Arrozi from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan delivered a lecture discussing Islamic law in Islamic financial institutions. These two lectures were in English and Arabic.
The third day, August 11, 2022, featured an introduction to three Islamic microfinance institutions: Bank Perkreditan Rakyat Syariah (BPR Syariah) and Bank Syariah Madinah. This was followed by a discussion on the practices of Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (Baitul Maal wa Tamwil) and Sharia Cooperatives by Farokhah Muzayinatun Niswah from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan.
On August 12, 2022, a lecture by Afifah Nur Millatina, a lecturer in Islamic Economics at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, discussed the opportunities and challenges of the halal industry in Indonesia. The lecture continued with a discussion of ijarah accounting according to the Statement of Islamic Financial Accounting Standards by Faricha Maf'ula from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan.
Islamic Banking
Entering the second week, August 15, 2022, the lecture began with a discussion of the ethical dimensions of Islamic banking in Indonesia by Aminudin Ma'ruf, MSc, from the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta.
The next session discussed the implementation of productive waqf in the agricultural sector in Indonesia by Farokhah Muzayinatun Niswah, SEI, MSi, from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan.
The following day, August 16, 2022, Elvina Assadam from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan discussed Sharia perspectives and guidelines in the marketing of financial services. Dita Pratiwi Kusumaningtyas from the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan continued the lecture, discussing the implementation of waqf accounting in Indonesia.
The final lecture, on August 18, 2022, was led by Fifi Hakimi, a lecturer in Islamic Economics at the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan, who discussed the digitalization of zakat, infaq, and shodaqoh (alms) in Indonesia.
The international lecture concluded with Pratiwi Kusumaningtyas, a lecturer in Islamic Economics at the University of Muhammadiyah Lamongan, discussing marketing strategies for the Islamic finance industry.
**Participant Comments**
At the end of the course, students were asked to submit a final assignment on the topic of comparing Islamic finance in Indonesia with that in their home countries.
The activity concluded with a closing ceremony on August 21, 2022, which was also attended by the Rector of Muhammadiyah University Lamongan and his staff.
International students were introduced to the Mayang Madu dance by students from the Elementary School Teacher Education program at Muhammadiyah University Lamongan.
Three international students then provided testimonials about the course: Muhammed Fayas from the University of Calicut, India; Norkamilah bin Mohd Rosely from Universiti Islam Malaysia; and Ahmed Maher Adnan from Al Aqsa University, Palestine.
They expressed that the program helped them improve their understanding of Islamic finance. They also hoped that Muhammadiyah University Lamongan would regularly hold this program.
Norkamilah bin Mohd Rosely stated that the program was extraordinary. Participants gained insight into Islamic finance practices in Indonesia and other countries such as India, Malaysia, Palestine, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
